On the 28th of May 1996 sabine Dardenne was riding her bike to school when she was kidnapped by Marc dutroux. She was twelve years old. This is the harrowing account of a young girl who was abducted, sexually abused, raped and locked in a tiny room in a cellar by a sadistic paedophile who fooled her into believing that his boss wanted her dead to he was hiding gher for her own safety. On the brink of adolecence and being forced to eat rotten or out of date food Sabine was not going to lay down and die without a fight. I choose to live by Sabine Dardenne, is a true story of strengh and survival, sharing with us the story of a young girl kidnapped and held hostage by a man who physically and mentally abused her for 80 days. The book takes you on a journey of 12 year olds Sabine's kidnapping. It tells a story of the tragic events that occured during this time, and the physical and mental abuse she suffered by Marc Dutroux a serial killer. The book isnt particularly well written, but its easy to read and does tell her story well, which is worth reading. It may be upsetting to read. I have been reading rather a lot of books on the misfortunes of others and asked myself what merit there was to reading accounts of child abuse, such as are demonstrated in this book, written by a young girl that was abducted by one of Europe's most notorious pedophiles in 1996 at the age of 12, and kept in captivity for three months of her life. The answer I came up with was that by reading books of this nature, what we give ourselves is an insight into what is happening in the world around us, and to help us keep an open mind and learn ways in which to recognize those things which could potentially harm children in our own environments.
