Advantages: Beautiful writing
Disadvantages: You will cry
This book is written by Kuki Gallman and is about her life. She started her life in Italy but when she married she moved to Africa, which is where the book is set. She tells us about the difficulties of starting life in Africa and the differences that she has to face between Africa and the world that she has grown up in. She tells us how her family became interested in the conservation of animals over there and what they did to increase the worlds awareness of the problems that Africa faced at the time. Kuki was very involved with supporting, the banning of the ivory trade. In the book are photos of her daughter sitting in front of a fire that is burning ivory. I read this book as I was travelling through Africa and I think it made it all the meaningful for me. I was seeing what she was writing about and able to view the beautiful animals that she was trying to protect. But I do not think that this is a book you should only read if you are going to Africa. This is one of the most beautifully written books I have ever read, if not the most beautiful. I have never read anybody's books who is able to bring up so much emotion in myself. All through her books are beautiful quotes that could just exist on their own. This has now been turned into a video starring Kim Bassinger. I have not seen this yet but I know the book will be able to provoke more feelings than the video ever could.
