In the scorching heat of a dry Italian summer a young boy makes a discovery so horrifying and so secret that he decides to tell no-one at all. The secret absorbs his attention and he wants to learn more but, in doing so, he has to face some harsh and frightening realities that will change his whole view of the world forever. Michele, the main character, acts out of naivity and childish curiosity and this somehow makes the book more terrifying - the frustrating glimpses into the complex adult world are given to us through a child's eyes and we cannot help but see as he does.
