On my recent holiday I ended up doing a lot of reading and had finished the three books I had taken away with me. So when we were visiting a nearby little town that had a charity shop I popped in to see if there were any books that looked worth reading. Most of them weren't really my thing but I found "I take this man" which looked ok and was only 50p so I thought it would be fine for some extra holiday reading.
The book is by Valerie Frankel who is an American author and appears to have written 6 other books although I have never heard of her before. The book is a "little black dress book" which seems to be a collection of romantic novels which are fun and there is a little black dress website with competitions, previews of new books and information about authors.
The full title on the front cover is "I take this man .......... Whether he likes it or not" and is about Penny Bracket who is jilted at the altar by her fiancé Bram Shiraz. Her mother Esther who never really liked Bram anyway in a moment of rage goes looking for Bram and when she finds him knocks him over the head with a bottle of champagne then bundles him into her car and locks him up in the top floor of her large mansion house. Now I should have known just by reading the information at the back of the book that this was not going to win any literary prizes but I was desperate for something to read!
The storyline in the book was not really very good. The mother of the bride knocking out the groom and then imprisoning him in a (very convenient) soundproof room in her attic complete with two-way mirror and microphone is rather bizarre and just a bit far-fetched. When we discover why Bram has jilted Penny at the altar it really doesn't get any better. The story then just goes from bad to worse.
The book was ok but just ok, for 50p it was fine but if I had paid the recommended retail price I would have been a bit disappointed. I didn't like the authors writing style, I felt at times she just added in bits to the story which weren't really necessary. There were a few funny bits in the book and at times did make me laugh but overall I wasn't really impressed. The characters in the book weren't really believable and the storyline was quite ridiculous and very cheesy at times. I didn't really find the characters very believable and didn't feel that they came to life. I felt if it had been written a bit better then the reader might have been able to care a bit more what was happening to the characters.
