Advantages: A great funny book

Disadvantages: Maybe a little short for older children.

I have seen pictures of this book but I've never actually read it. Noah decided that he'd quite like to add it to his ever growing pile of books that we were borrowing from the library and so it came home in a carrier bag with us on Wednesday.

'I want my potty' is written by Tony Ross and was first published in 1986 by Picture Lions.

The story tell of the little princess who, one day decides that she doesn't like wearing nappies anymore. The queen tries to encourage her to sit on the potty when she feels that she needs a wee but the little Princess isn't happy with this idea. Eventually she comes around to the idea and enjoys sitting on the potty but one day when she is at the top of the castle she desperately needs to go so shouts 'I want my potty'. Everyone hears her cry and it is a case of chinese whisper until the admiral hears the call and knows where the potty is. The maid eventually gets to the top of the castle to relieve the poor child but is a little too late.

This book is very simple and there are very few words on each page. I think the whole point of this is to try and spark a little bit of a coversation between the reader and the child as it's probably a good book to have around when you are potty training.

The illustrations are also very simple and there isn't much detail on each page. Most of the pages feature a cute picture of the little princess and her potty but as the book progresses we get to see other characters from 'castle life' from the gardener to the cook. All the characters are very friendly looking and some of them are quite funny looking too.

The illustrations are a long the same lines as 'Not Now Bernard' which is drawn in a very similar way and the colouring is very much the same in that it's very pale and almost looks as though it's been painted on.

Noah really enjoyed this book and keeps picking it and reading it through memory. Every now and again he will come out to the kitchen and shout at the top of his voice 'I NEED MY POTTY' just for the sheer hell of it! I jump to attention and say 'oh do you need a wee, wee?' Only to hear him say 'No' and start giggling. He really enjoyed the parts where all of the members of the castle were saying 'She needs her potty' and didn't take any time at all to start joining in with this.

I think this is a great book to have around regardless of whether you are potty training or not. It's funny, simple and very entertaining for both the adult and child reader. It's great for toilet talk and even though Noah isn't potty training he really loved it. I think it will take some coaxing before we return this one to the library!

If you like this one then you will love the other books that Tony Ross has written about the Little Princess and here is now a TV series being shown which backs up all of the little princess books in the series.

Summary: This book is very good, give it a go!
