Advantages: Fun as well as informative
Disadvantages: May not appeal to all children
I Wonder Why Romans Wore Togas is one of a series of books written for children that includes titles such as I Wonder Why Snakes Shed Their Skin, I Wonder Why The Sea Is Salty and I Wonder Why My Tummy Rumbles.
Each book follows a different theme ranging from ancient Rome to the dinosaurs, with each page answering a different fascinating question that children have always wanted to know. Each answer is carefully constructed in a way that makes it easy to understand yet doesn't oversimplify the topic. The book is also full of awesome brightly coloured cartoon style artwork and combining this with the interesting mix of facts ensures that the books will inspire all young minds.
The books are suitable for children aged between six and twelve and provide the perfect introduction to a vast array of topics. Each told in a way that makes them not only seem interesting but more importantly fun.
This book like most of the books with a historical nature starts with the question "Who were the Romans?" and devotes a double page spread to looking at where the Romans came from. This is accompanied by a large image of a map pictorially depicting the places they were from.
Other questions answered are "Who attacked the Romans with Elephants?" and "Which houses had holes in the roof?" Each question is generally accompanied by a large image that helps to illustrate the answer and each double page spread also contains two or more small usually humorous facts that are in turn accompanied by humorous images.
All in all I think the books are a brilliant way of introducing children to the world of knowledge available to them and because of the way the information is presented once your child has read one they'll soon what to read more. Maybe you'll even learn something along the way.
The books selling price varies greatly from place to place so if you are interested in purchasing this book you should certainly look around.
Summary: Brilliant books that help your child learn about history in an entertaining way

- 05/07/08 How are the illustrations though? Black and white? Showing humorous animals? Colourful? Is there a price for this book? |
