Dragon's Fire - Anne McCaffrey

Crowned Review A bit of a damp squib (1302 words)

I wholly recommend comfort reading - when you want an excuse to spend extra time under the duvet, or giving your brain a rest from more taxing pursuits. For me, Anne McCaffrey s Chronicles of Pern novels are perfect comfort reading. Not exactly young reader, but not demanding; flights of sheer fantasy to another world - perfect! The story of Pern is one of planet colonisation gone wrong - the idyllic world turns out to be attacked by plant- and flesh-eating Thread every few hundred years, as a rogue sister planet swings close enough to allow across-space attacks by the deadly organisms. Premium Review The Dragon Series (430 words)

Wow. Now this is fantasy. I started reading Anne McCaffrey when I was about 12. I started with 'The Ship who Sang', and have since read almost everything she has ever written. The dragon series is one of the greatest works of fiction that I have ever read. Bestsellers in their time, this collection of ...

Anne McCaffrey was my first science fiction author, and hence one of my favourites. She got me hooked on science fiction, and then later into fantasy. McCaffrey's strength is her ability to create characters which are instantly likeable, and others who you can hate just as quickly, and while some of her characters across all of her series can sometimes have a certain 'sameness', the background story for each and the plots of the books they're involved in make each one different and interesting. Her most famous series is certainly the dragon series, based on the planet of Pern which has dragons who fight an organism that falls from the sky called Thread. ...
