Advantages: Interesting stories, therapy "explained"

Disadvantages: May not agree with underlying theory

The six stories in this book are fictional case histories written from the point of view of a therapist. The author, who is herself a widely respected psychotherapist, has drawn from her experiences in the consulting room to create the characters concerned.

The text of the stories is interspersed with explanations of some of the theory involved in the therapy. Although informative, I personally found these italicised sections rather hard going and at times very fanciful. That is probably because I am not a fan of Freud.

Each of the stories has its merits, however, and I found two of them particularly captivating in that I was able to feel sympathetic towards the character portrayed.

This is definitely not a light-hearted read and is probably most suited to psychotherapy students or those who have a definite leaning towards Freudian theory.
