He tells us that he is an ordinary chap, as prone to failings as the next man, and that his observations of the failings of others should not be seen as malicious. I have long been a fan of George Eliot, and when a writer has been dead for a long time, you don't expect to stumble on works of theirs that previously you hadn't heard of. "The Impressions of Theophrastus Such" was not a work I had heard mention of, and I have only ever seen one copy - the one I now own. I think a bit of background is required. George Eliot was a Victorian novelist, female, who used a male pen name to encourage readers to take her work more seriously. She lived with a married man - not married to her, and this caused some scandal.
