It's during passages such as this near the start of the book where Durant really describes his fear for his own life and that of his friends and comrades as well. The graphic detail about for me one of the more disturbing passages of the book for me really hits home exactly what he and the other troops faced.

Anyone who knows me will be aware that I have a thing about war films and books. I list Black Hawk Down as one of my favourite films of all time. The original book by Mark Bowden in 1999 pieced together the events in Somalia during October 1993. His book was the first chance anyone got to hear the full story of what happened. The release of Michael Durant's account of what happened was released in 2004 and gives a different perspective on the events of that fateful mission.
