Tess Gerritsen - In Their Footsteps
Tess Gerritsen is one of my favourite authors. This one is from her romantic suspense series.
The story in brief
Beryl Tavistock and her brother Jordan had always been haunted by the circumstances of their parents death twenty years earlier. The deaths were shrouded in mystery and scandal. At her uncle's party, Beryl meets ex CIA agent Richard Wolf. They are instantly attracted to each other and she enlists his help in her search for the truth. Their search takes us from an English country house to the seedy backstreets of Paris then on to Greece. Beryl must tackle the world of espionage where no one is what they seem and she has to try to stay alive.
I found the book rather hard going especiallyin the middle as I felt the romance rather got in the way of the story. I was tempted to give up on it but plodded on. Luckily I had read several Tess Gerritsen books before this one and know she writes excellent thrillers. Unfortunately this was not one of them.
If you enjoy romances you will probably like this but if like me you prefer thrillers give this one a miss and check out her later novels such as The Surgeon, Bloodstream or The Mephisto Club. These thrillers feature Maura Isles and Jane Rizzoli and make excellent reading.
Tess Gerritsen writes crime/thriller novels and I particularly like her novels in the Rizzoli/Isles series. I did however happen to come across a book called In Their Footsteps which is from her Romantic Suspense series. I believe these series of books were some of the first she wrote.
In Their Footsteps follows Beryl Tavistock and how she decides once and for all that she needs to know the truth behind her parents deaths which had occurred twenty years before. At a party her Uncle is giving she is introduced to Richard Wolf who is ex CIA. Instantly there is an attraction between them, but Beryl does not know whether to let her guard down and trust him. Together and with the help of her brother they try to find out what happened all those years ago. In doing so they begin a cat and mouse game in the world of international espionage. Travelling from London to Paris and even to Greece to discover the truth.
The story flows very well and the relationship between Beryl and Richard is both playful and exciting to see evolving. Both are very likeable and the other characters play key parts such as the family friends. As you ask yourself if any of them could have been involved in her parents deaths. Even though her brother is in the background for quite a bit of the story his character still manages to impress as he deeply cares for his sister. In Their Footsteps definitely keeps the reader guessing right up until the explosive end.
With a story full of suspense, intrigue and romance this book keeps the reader on their toes as to what will happen next. I really enjoyed the story and could hardly put it down if this book is anything to go by I can't wait to read more of Tess Gerritsen's romantic suspense novels.
