Advantages: very comical

Disadvantages: cketchy characters

The book on which the film "Maybe Baby" is based, I was expecting this to be very funny. And it is. It's just that the characters aren't really very likeable. The novel is written in alternate diary format, with Lucy and Sam, an infertile couple, writing down their feelings for themselves. However, as the novel progresses not only do we become more involved in their longing for a child, but also the conflict between them as to whether they really do want one or not as their lives take turns that the other partner does not know about.
Although it is incredible funny, and in fact had me waking my sister up laughing at one point, the problem is that the characters just aren't very likeable and you end up not even wanting them to have children. It's still a good read though and I would recommend it as not being insensitive in its treatment of a very sensitive subject.

Its obviously written from 'being in the know' about the London media scene. For someone who lives in the country its frightening to think there are characters (quite obviously Ben Elton has based his characters on real pepole) being paid huge sums by the BBC to have useless jobs like Sam (yes thats his name) has in the book. I agree that it is very funny, not alot of books make me laugh aloud like it has been. Asl o, its appeal is universal, both my parents (unusually liked it, and si did my husband. We all have very different reading habits, so it would be a good book to buy as a present, appealing to a wide range

Wasn't the male character called Sam, not John?
