“ Author: Laurell K. Hamilton / Genre: Horror / Publisher: Orbit „
The book I will now review is "Incubus dreams - an Anita Blake vampire hunter novel", by Laurell K Hamilton.
I have to truthful, I had never heard of this author or any of her books before. I have always been a big fan of anything "vampire", from the erotic tale of Bram Stoker through to the downright gruesome of John Carpenters vampires, I have not , however tried reading about them.
I had intended on starting with Anne Rice's offering when I stumbled across this book in my local library sale.
As soon as I read "vampire hunter" on the front cover, my imagination had spiked, so knew I had to have it.
When purchasing this book I hadn't realised this is one of a great many books in a series, so was a little worried I wouldn't know what the hell was going on, luckily it didn't take too long to get the jist of what had happened previously.
~~~~~~ THE PLOT ~~~~~~
Anita Blake (the main female character), is a necromancer, which in layman's terms is an individual who can bring the dead back to a state of zombie, this is a power she has held since childhood.
This power is now used for the benefit of the law, bringing murder victims back just long enough to incriminate their killers, who better than to solve the crime of their own death than by the victim!
She is also a federal marshal, a title bestowed upon her as the chief vampire killer in the area. Her authority in this field has been long needed due to the fact that vampires (among other so-called mythical creatures), are now legally living among us.
The vampires (along with the werewolves, lycanthorpes which are half man, half leopard and the wererats), are all under the control of a "master vampire", that most cities across the country have, unfortunately there are very few who are strong enough to control them if they decided to go of the rails, luckily Jean-Claude was not one of them.
This is where it starts to get complicated! Anita is a member of the law, she is also as her colleagues call her behind her back coffin bait. She has been Jean-Claude's(master vampire) lover for a while, with this relationship comes powers, one of them being, due to the bloodline of her master vampire, the "arduer".
The arduer is all consuming and the ultimate power source, unfortunately the power has to be fed, and the only way to do this is through sex! (ok, this is when I started to get a little suspicious!)
And boy does she have a hunger!! She has an unconventional home life. She lives with two lycanthorpes called Nathaniel and Micah, she lives with them as boyfriend and girlfriend and uses them as a means of feeding her "arduer", in return they cook clean and generally see to Anita's every need.
This book starts with Anita, Nathaniel and Micah at one of Anita's colleagues wedding reception.
As the majority of people attending the reception are cops, everyone (excluding Anita, she hates dancing, and as one of the ushers she is expected to!), is praying that there is no big emergency. Unfortunately, (or fortunately for Anita), a body is found. A stripper has been found murdered, and upon closer inspection, is found to have been drained of ever single drop of her blood, by what can only be described as a gang of vampires.
This (through a little more investigation from Anita), is then turned into a serial killer hunt and as most of the cops are human turn the murder round onto Anita's so-called boyfriend and close friends.
After reading this part I felt like I was in for a great read, thrilling, exciting, possibly a little gory..... Boy was I wrong!
The serial killer aspect is bounded about for a few pages, then straight back to the sex!
Now, I am far from being a prude and quite enjoy a little erotic sex to add atmosphere to a story, but this was a little excessive, the amount of sex was apparently needed to emphasize the veracity of the "arduer", I am however relieved that the author didn't go into so much detail on the act itself, although at times it was bordering on porn.
~~~~~~ PRICE AND AVAILABILITY ~~~~~~
This actually only cost me 10p, which I feel is bloody fantastic. This book is available on Amazon for £17.99, I can only assume that is a hardback version as the retail price on the back of the paperback version is £11.99.
At full price the book is a little on the steep side but considering you get 658 pages for your money, may even it out at the paperback price!

~~~~~~ CONCLUSION ~~~~~~
Would I read this again.............. Maybe, I couldn't say yes or no for definite. This book is number 13 in the series, so before I could recommend for sure I would need to read these. I feel if I had a bit of prior knowledge I may not have felt that the amount of sex in there was excessive, especially if it took 12 books to build up to it!!
This is a moderately good book, which after catching up on the previous books, may well give it another read!
Thanks for reading x
ps also posted on ciao under my alter ego sarahbarrow!
As consultant to the Regional Preternatural Crime Investigation Unit, Anita Blake is called in on what appears to be a case involving a serial killer - a vampire serial killer - who may be preying on strippers. She's sure that none of the local vamps are responsible, but her judgement may be clouded by a conflict of interests. For she is, after all, the consort of Jean-Claude, the ever- intoxicating Master Vampire of the City - something both her human friends and her ex, the alpha werewolf Richard, are quick to point out. Surrounded by suspicion and overwhelmed by her attempts to control her own primal lusts for vampire, werewolf and shapeshifter, Anita is about to be pushed to her limits - and beyond.
