***Background***

Mick Inkpen is well known for his Kipper and Wibbly Pig series of books and of course the television series of Kipper too. His lovely gentle stories and beautiful illustrations are fantastic and young children love them.

***The Story***

The story starts with,

"Is it bedtime, Wibbly Pig?
No silly! I'm still in the bath!"

Throughout the book Wibbly Pig is asked questions but he seems to have an answer for every question and it's always 'No!'
We see him going to the toilet, reading his book and having his hot drink before brushing his teeth and finally going up the stairs. Even in bed he stalls as long as he can but as soon as his toys are all tucked in beside him there is quietness.

"Shall we turn out the light, Wibbly Pig?
Wibbly Pig? Wibbly Pig?
Are you asleep, Wibbly?"
When we turn the last page it shows Wibbly flying around with his toys saying,

"No, I'm dreaming!"

***The Illustrations***

Wibbly Pig is an easy character to spot because he is so simply drawn. His floppy ears and curly tail make him one of the cutest characters around and because the majority of the background is white the colours really stand out here. The writing is clear and easy to read but is made to look like it has been written in crayon and this adds a childish feel to it.

***My Thoughts***

My son has almost outgrown these books now much to my sadness. The stories are simple and ideal for a younger child who won't get bored with lots of text to read on every page. This style of book is excellent for young readers too because of the easy to read text and simple words throughout the book and it was one of the first books that my son was able to read by himself.

The story here is one that most parents will be familiar with, because every child tries to stall at bedtime to some extent. The excuses Wibbly gives are sensible though and shouldn't give a child daft ideas to try them out.

I love the pictures in this book too and they all look like they are outlined with crayon, which is probably why they are so appealing to children. It also gives a somewhat fluffy edging to Wibbly's toys and this makes them look very cuddly. The colours used are all pastel shades making it easygoing on the eyes and perfect for bedtime.

This character is one of the best out there because he is just so lovable to look at and the stories are easy for a young child to understand.

If you ever fall asleep in the bath, Freddy Kreuger will attack you. I learnt this from movies.
