I've already written a review on the Titch DVD so I won't go into too many details about the background or the characters of this book. If you are interested, you are more than welcome to have a look at the other review.
***The Author***
Pat Hutchins is the author of this set of books but she has also written many other books including the popular Rosie's Walk. There are other styles of Titch books but this one is part of the Titch Storybook Collection - there are 12 in total in this series.
***The Story***
Titch is really excited when he finds out that Grandpa is coming to look after him. His mother tells him that he should have a bath and get into his pyjamas before he arrives, so that there will be more time to play before bedtime.
Unfortunately, by the time he finds his pjs, his sister, Mary has already dived into the bathroom and was washing her hair. The bathwater is then too cold to get into the bath so mum tells him to get his slippers while she adds some more. Of course things go wrong again when his brother, Peter decides to wash his face and again the water goes cold. While Titch goes to find his rubber duck, dad goes in for a shave and again the hot water that mum added has turned cold and there was no more hot water.
Luckily Grandpa arrives with a brand new boat for Titch so they decided to go and sail it in the cold water.
***The Illustrations***
The illustrations are taken from still shots from the TV shows so they may be familiar to your children if they have already watched these. The colours are bright and the scenes are very realistic.
***My Thoughts***
I love Titch, almost as much as my son does - in fact, maybe even a little bit more. The simple stories are told at a level that makes them easy for a young child to understand and of course most toddlers will be able to sympathise with Titch if they have older brothers and sisters too.
This story is a little bit predictable as each member of the family manages to get into the bathroom before Titch and like in the series, he feels that he is always getting pushed to the background. However, it's nice to see that his Grandpa always puts him first and seems to know exactly what will make him happy again.
Titch is a lovable little character and my son seems to relate to him very well. He loves following the story and his favourite bit is when Peter stands on the soap that Titch has dropped earlier. This always makes him laugh.
The recommended age on the back of this book is for age 2+ for being read to but age 5+ for reading alone and the black words on the white background stand out very well for young readers. The dialogue is quite simple too so it's easy for children to remember and this of course aids with reading.
