Newest Review: ... this one also provides excellent background information, both in the general, practical introductory section and in the ... more  ... section at the end which gives potted history, cultural contexts and excellent list for further reading.
We have used the Rough Guide to Italy on three Italian trips (one to Northern Italy and Rome, one to Pisa and one to Puglia). In the latter two cases we complemented the main guide by more detailed local guides and overall I have been extremely happy with the books. In fact, it's probably the best Rough Guide I used, and I have used one for pretty much every place we visited.

The Rough Guides theoretically cover the bottom bracket of the travel market - backpackers, penniless travellers, those, who as the title partially implies, are roughing it. In reality though they actually are simply quite broad-ranging, with a wide appeal to a variety of travellers - not perhaps those at the top end of the market, but for example the accommodation and eating places listings start at the bottom with hostels and cheap cafeterias, but go all the way to the top to five star hotels and Michelin restaurants.
