Love this book!
I watched the Ministry of Food series last year and the book has very little to do with it other than some small profiles of the major characters from the show. Rather, this is a collection of simple(ish) recipes that Jamie encourages you learn, cook and pass on to friends and family.
I made a resolution this year that my wife and I would cook more meals from scratch and eat less frozen, pre-prepared grub. This book has been a major contributor to that effort. January and February saw us eat more stews than we ever have done in our 5 years of marriage! Jamie provides a basic "framework" recipe and then you just tailor it depending on your mood and tastes. So lamb, beef, pork and chicken stew are all added to your arsenal of recipes just by learning the one method. Then he goes further to describe how you can convert the stew into a pie, a hotpot and other variations. Trust us - the recipes are to die for.
We are now much more adventurous in the kitchen, routinely buying herbs and more exotic ingredients during our visits to the shops. And, as a fantastic and unexpected side-effect, we've both lost weight! A hearty home-cooked meal after work banishes all thoughs of snacks later on.
Anyway, to all you people who think you can't cook (just like we did), trust me - you really can. Give it a shot. The book costs less than the price of a takeaway and really could change the way you eat!
