Newest Review: ... Jane Austen was one of the first. So to the plot: Jemima is fat. That is really all we need to know about Jemima, that and ... more

... the vague mention of glossy hair (obviously a staple requirement for a heroine) and the fact she works as a journalist for a local paper and is passed up for promotion by her more glamourous and prettier colleagues. She has a crush on a gorgeous colleague called Ben, who thinks of her just as a friend and has one other female friend at work (naturally glam also), and a couple of uber-bitchy and shallow flat mates. Did I mention Jemima was fat? Don’t worry if you happen to forget during the course of the book, you wi...more

Premium Review Jemina J - Jane Green: A Fat Fairytale (726 words)

“You must read Jane Green, her books are great!” so said a good friend of mine. We had similar tastes in books so I took her recommendation seriously and was pleased to spot three Jane Green books for £5 from the Book People who come to my work. Once I started to read the first book I was less pleased however. Jemima J was the third of the three; the others - their titles long forgotten - have been consigned to the charity shop (I felt terribly guilty – I hope they got something for them). This book has been responsible for me :- 1) Not noticing it was 3pm ‘til five past, consequently being late to pick my kids up from school, 2) Staying up far later than I should at nights, leading to tiredness, grumpiness and headaches, 3) Enjoying the advert breaks more than my favourite TV programmes, only because I wanted to read The Book, 4) Not doing enough housework, cooking tea an hour later than usual, being annoyed that my friend was coming round and – worst of all! – not spending much time writing opinions on Dooyoo!! And all because of this book! The book which is so amazingly, wonderfully, captivatingly, ...

Holidays are a time for reading, and reading requires books, which is how I found myself in my local WH Smiths last month, looking through their paperback fiction for a few books to buy. I had no idea what I wanted but eventually happened upon Jane Green’s “Jemima J”. I’d heard of Green before but never read any of her work. The back of this one looked good though and so, on a whim, and because at 450 pages long, it might last be a whole day or so by the pool, I bought it. Jemima (note the second ‘m’, dooyoo), or JJ as she comes to be called, is the book’s unlikely heroine. When we are introduced to her, she’s ...
