Jolly Phonics is used by many schools to teach reading and writing. As my eldest started school last year and they were using phonics we got these workbooks so we knew what he was doing and could join in. The way the system works is each letter sound, which can be more than one letter, is learn with the aid of an action, a mini story and a song. The songs aren't in these workbooks but there are a couple of book of the songs, one with a CD which go along with the workbooks.
