be killed by it. This is not really a nice thing to do to somebody either. Cynics may read both poets' versions of the actual event: 'The 59th Bear' by Plath, and the poem of the same name in 'Birthday Letters' by Hughes. Having an affair is nasty, and I know that trying to balance it out by saying "but /she/ did x" is probably bad moral practise. But I do find myself wondering that if my partner wrote a work of fiction where she wished me dead, if I wouldn't stop and wonder whether this relationship was the right one to be in. BIRTHDAY LETTERS This anthology, written about Plath after her death is where Ted Hughes finally opens ...

" I do it so it feels like hell" - "Lady Lazarus" Throughout her life, Sylvia Plath suffered from depression, anger, bitterness, and the heartache of a failed marriage. This is reflected in her poetry collection as she tragically searches for self-understanding and acceptance as a single mother in a male-dominated society. In "Morning Song", Plath is describing her feelings about being a mother, most likely for the first time. The newborn's "nakedness makes the parents feel about as vulnerable as the baby is. Plath does not feel like a mother and suffered from Post-natal depression after the birth of her first child, the first ...

Ariel - Sylvia Plath

'Ariel' is Sylvia Plath's best-known collection, and, quite simply, her best work. Not that this is saying much, unfortunately. A lot of Plath's early work is, to put it bluntly, not very good, and it is unfortunate for her that her death came so tragically early, because in this, her last collection, there are a handful of poems that are amongst the most moving and beautiful ever written. Sadly, the rest don't compare. The real tragedy of Plath is not so much her death itself, but that it came at a time when she was just beginning to find her voice as a poet of great strength and character. Poems like 'Edge', 'Morning Song', ...
