The Bedroom Philosophers - Marquis de Sade
by sottovoce1982 - written on 22/11/07 (Very useful, 229 readings)
Rating:
La Philosophie Dans le Boudoir, which is translated as Philosophy in the Bedroom in some versions and as The Bedroom philosophers in others, is a play written by Marquis de Sade in 1795. It represents the transformation of the 15-year-old virgin, Eugénie, who was brought up by her virtuous mother to become an honest woman. Her father, who disapproves of his wife s way of life, sends her to learn from three libertines how life should be lived. The trio encourages the young girl to express all her desires and passions, and her ultimate hatred seems to be saved for her own mother. The virtuous woman is ridiculed and humiliated by everyone and then she is stripped, beaten, ...

Juliette - Marquis de Sade
by sottovoce1982 - written on 10/11/07 (Very useful, 231 readings)
Rating:
Juliette (1797–1801) by Marquis de Sade This book is extreme, pornographic and violent, and as one of the evil characters in Les Liaisons Dangereuses puts it: “it’s not my fault.” Were you offended by the title of this review? First, this was not meant as a sacrilege: I try to respect the sensibility of the readers as much as I can, but when I thought of the title I just couldn’t resist the temptation; I felt when I was reading the book that Sade wanted his readers to “have fun” by force. Second, it is not meant to attract people’s attention through involving sex: the book belongs to erotic literature and so the title is not out of place. Furthermore, if you were ...

The Complete Marquis De Sade: 1 - Marquis De Sade
by cae07985 - written on 01/06/09 (Useful, 9 readings)
Rating:
the faint at heart! I purchased this book after watching the brilliant film Quills starring Geoffrey Rush, which is based on the life and works of the Marquis De Sade. The film however doesn t show anywhere near how depraved his writings were. The book is translated (from French) very well and is easy to read, and if you can put the disturbing content aside, and read it as a comedy (his books were entertainment in his day, when sexual freedom was frowned upon) or as an insight to the sexually depraved mind, it s an enjoyable read. The book contains all the Marquis most infamous works, all with Libertines, sex, rape and torture as the main subject. The books ...
