Its 45 years since the launch of the original Ladybirds Key Words reading scheme. The original stories featured the antics of Peter, Jane and Pat the dog. In the current version the friendly characters of my childhood have been replaced by Kate, Tom and Sam the dog. Not content to leave the change at that the photographs of real people, places and animals have been replaced with colourful cartoon drawings. Its almost like modern children can't handle reality and need to have everything fluffified to something warm and cosy. No matter the general feel of the books is the same. Due to the lack of time that teachers seem to have to read with children individually, it would seem that for children to become fluent readers many of them need help from their parents. Now I know that for many parents this is a normal thing to do anyway, but for those parents who don't read with their children, I can only emphasise that to be able to read is to be able to learn, those children who have slipped through the net and who cannot read very well, will struggle with the rest of their school work throughout their school life. UPDATE: I have since found you can also order these books on most of the book websites and ladybird have their own site also. I would also like to add that even though I did state that some teachers do not like you to teach your child to read yourself. I am lucky that my son attends a school which actively encourage parents involvement. I have spoken with his teacher and explained what I am doing at home and she is more than happy for this to happen as long as we keep the school informed. The main reason for this is so that they know what my son is capable of and do not bore him by pushing him to read books that will be far too easy for him. ... Read the complete review
