Hardwick, is no stranger to youths like Danny, having worked in Sunderland and Newcastle in hostels and with young offenders, and you get the feeling that many of the episodes which occur in the book have happened in his career.
However, despite the book being compelling and readable, it's clear that writing is not his career and the story is at times clumsily written. In some of my other book reviews, I've mentioned the A-Z author challenge I'm taking this year. Basically, you read books by authors with names A-Z within one year. I started as part of a New Year's resolution and have been distracted by other books with letters I'd already covered, but am about halfway through. So I was pleased a book I'd found at the library would help me cover H! Kicked Out tells of the life of 16-year-old Danny after he is kicked out of his parents' house for being a no-good stoner.
