In the first book Darren Shan and his best friend Steve go to circus ... more  ... and Darren is amazed about a spider which does tricks. So later on that night he steals the spider. When showing the spider to Steve though this poisonous spider bites Steve. Steve is then taken to hospital and looks as if he is dying. Darren then makes a deal with the spider owner. Steve will get cured...if Darren becomes a vampire! Darren goes ahead with the deal and then has to fake his death as he can't continue living normal life as he has so much more strength he could kill his mother while hugging her.

In my review of Darren Shan and the Killers of the dawn I will not contain any spoilers of the book but I may write a few hints in and I will write about the first book in the series as it is necessary for you to understand as to what is happening.
