Advantages: very exciting, a bit too long
Disadvantages: fiance hid it, it ends
Have you ever read a book that your partner becomes jealous of? You are reading it every chance you get and find yourself taking it to the toilet with you. Your partner gets so jealous you go to carry on reading and find your book has disappeared. He has only gone and hidden it. This happened with this book. I had seventy pages left and was getting really into it and I turn round and the book has gone! He did give me it back for his sake and now it is finished and I want it to carry on. My sister in law recommended this book to me. First of all I was not too interested. 790 pages is quite long to me and I thought I would never et through it. She ranted on about it for so long though I had to investigate and read it for myself. I will first of all talk about the characters and will start with Phoebe Fredericks the main character. She is 23 and loses her job pretty much straight away. She doesn’t get another job for the whole summer apart from the odd nights at Bar Barella as a barmaid. Her money situation is tight but she tends not to let it bother her. Phoebe lives with Fliss who is a sculptor. She is very supportive and works hard. Her love life is a bit confusing and she has no confidence. Saskia Seaton is Pheobe’s other best friend if you can call her that. They share the same birthday and went to school together. Their families know each other well and Pheobe used to be forced to spend a lot of time at the Seaton’s. Saskia used to bully Pheobe as a child and has not really stopped. Felix is the hunk of the book. Thousands envy he girlfriends. He loves the attention but sometimes feels smothered. He is a model but his real aim is to be a top actor, the trouble is he cannot act. He doesn’t treat women with respect and humiliates them in front of crowds. He had a very bad childhood and thinks his mother hates him. Dan is Pheobe’s married lover. He really cares for Pheobe yet
will not leave his wife for her. The trouble is Pheobe is too smitten and continues the relationship for as long as possible. Dylan is Felix’s friend. They seem to follow each other everywhere. He often develops crushes on Felix’s girlfriends and becomes disappointed when they choose Felix over him. There are many other characters but have mentioned the most important ones. The book starts off with Phoebe getting fired from work again. She then gets invited to Berkshire for the weekend to see her old school friend Saskia. Saskia’s mum Gin is the one who invited her and Saskia doesn’t want her there. Her fiancé Felix has just left her just as they were to get married. She is a state and will not come out of her room. She comes up with a plan. She wants Phoebe to do her dirty work for her and treat Felix like he has treated her. At first Phoebe refuses but then after seeing the pain Saskia has gone through she decides to help her out. Saskia has prepared a Felix file with a lot of information about Felix’s likes and dislikes. In no time Phoebe has Felix wrapped around her little finger. She doesn’t stick completely to the plan, instead of creating a new identity to attract Felix she sticks to being herself. Felix becomes smitten and given time (a few days!) Phoebe begins to fall for him. They have a month of enjoyment and then Saskia decides the time has come and Phoebe must do the deed at a murder mystery weekend Fliss is organising. Phoebe has a lot of thinking to do. Can she go through with it or will she let her friend down. Only you can find out by reading it for yourself. I could continue to write more about the characters and the storyline but I don’t want to ruin the enjoyment for anyone reading this book. I have now read three of Fiona Walker’s book and I have to say this is the best one. It does have a lot of sex and some bad language but that is life an
d this makes it even more realistic. If you are a fan of hers or you just want a good book to read go out and get this.

- 08/08/01 I totally agree with you, I absolutely love this book. She's my favourite author, I've read anything she's written, but I have to admit that her recent stuff isn't as good as her early books! |
