Advantages: Gripping read and really well written.

Disadvantages: None for me!

I bought this book at a jumble sale for about 16p (6 books for £1). I watched the film years ago, starring Morgan Freeman, so I already knew what the book was about and knew it was the kind of book I enjoyed reading - crime/thriller.

The book is written by James Patterson. I had never read any of his books before this one but I was well aware of his name. He had been mentioned to me on numerous occasions through recommendations from friends and family. I was not disappointed!

The book was easy to read because it flowed so well. Every chapter had me gripped and I just had to keep reading. Some of the scenes were quite graphic at the start of the book but it wasn't continuous throughout.

The book is set in America and it is about 2 serial killers. The 2 killers seemed to be linked but the killings are happening on opposite sides of America. One of the killers brutally murders women and the other killer abducts, repeatedly rapes and then sometimes kills his victims. He keeps them locked away in individual rooms so that they can't talk to each other. They are given house rules and if they break any of the rules - they are killed.

The main character is called Alex Cross who is a detective and also has a psychology background. He becomes involved in the case after his niece is kidnapped by one of the killers.

I was really impressed with the way the book was written. It follows the main character as well as each of the serial killers and a few other characters. I thought this was a great way to write a book because I felt there were no lulls. There was a lot going on to keep the reader's attention.

I have since found out this is the second book in a series of Alex Cross novels. I feel a bit gutted that I didn't read book 1 first. I certainly will be reading more James Patterson books and I hope they all live up to the standard of this book.

If you haven't read this book, I would definitely recommend it - if you enjoy crime/thrillers with a few graphic scenes.

Summary: Crime thriller that keeps you guessing until the very end!
