Advantages: Cant put them down
Disadvantages: cant put them down!
I have thoroughly enjoyed all the Virginia Andrews books that I have read, but I always leave a big gap in between series. This is for two reasons. One is that the stories all follow very similar themes, even though they are all very individual. The other is that I can’t put them down once I have started them! The Landry series has not disappointed me. The series consists of ‘Ruby’, ‘Pearl in the Mist’, ‘All That Glitters’ and Hidden Jewel’. Then there is the customary prequel called ‘Tarnished Gold’. They contain the usual aspects- hidden family secrets, incest, rags to riches and tragedy. The series is set in Louisiana- in the bayou and New Orleans. Ruby’s mother died in childbirth and she is brought up by her Grandmere. Of course, she falls in love with the one person who is forbidden to her. Before her Grandmere dies Ruby finds out that she has a very rich father in New Orleans and a twin sister, who know nothing about her. Ruby is reunited with lost family but happiness is still to allude her, thanks to her wicked stepmother and spoilt jealous sister. She eventually goes full circle and returns, pregnant, to her rundown shack in the bayou. There are a lot more twists and turns before the story ends. The prequel, ‘Tarnished Gold’ tells the story of Ruby’s mother, who was raped by a powerful man in the bayou. This story helps to explain the events of the series. Once again, I was sad to come to the end of the series. I wanted to continue reading about Pearl, Ruby’s daughter and the other characters. This series is highly recommended.

- 27/07/01 I couldn't agree more! I too have read them all at least twice and can never put them down. It's nice to know I'm not alone. Thanks for a great review! |
