I have been reading plays and going to the theatre seriously for about 8 years now. I am somewhat annoyed that I have only just come into contact with Harold Pinter and his works, as I feel I have missed out so much. He is such an insirational, witty, clever man, and his plays just blow my mind. Landscape, in particular, is such a magnificent comment on society that I haev never come across in a play text before. Pinter writes so matter-of-factly, so stright to the point. the pauses and silencences add huge dramatic tension and atmosphere to the story. Who are these people? What has happened to them? Currently, I am in the process stages of creating a twenty minutes performance, based on the Harold Pinter play called "Landscape". I had previously read his other plays, which are called "The dumb waiter" and "The birthday party", both extremely influential and interesting plays. This is one of the reasons for my attraction to choosing a "Harold Pinter" play. Landscape centres around two characters named "Beth" and "Duff" with their relationship being left open to the audience's interpretation. Landscape By Harold Pinter (Landscape was first presented on radio by the BBC On 25th April, 1968, with Peggy Ashcroft as BETH and Eric Porter as DUFF) There are two characters in this play, a middle-aged married couple, and yet you will not find a single dialogue between them. It is by no way a comic play, but the manner in which each of the two characters is talking about a completely different thing becomes a little funny as you read/watch more of the play.
