Theoretically stimulating (Landscape - Harold Pinter)

Advantages: Can lead to many discussions as is open to interpretation

Disadvantages: Some may fing the whole play boring as it it very conversational.

Currently, I am in the process stages of creating a twenty minutes performance, based on the Harold Pinter play called "Landscape". I had previously read his other plays, which are called "The dumb waiter" and "The birthday party", both extremely influential and interesting plays. This is one of the reasons for my attraction to choosing a "Harold Pinter" play.

Landscape centres around two characters named "Beth" and "Duff" with their relationship being left open to the audience's interpretation. From my own perspective, I believe that the pair are a married couple who are in their 60's and are in a static uncommunicative relationship. "Beth" is looking back on her past, her happy memories when her and "Duff" were in their 20's, their relationship was new, exciting, loving and romantic. "Duff", constantly is trying to talk to "Duff" and make her talk to him but she won't and continues to almost talked to herself about the past.

Both the characters talk but there dialogue is never linked as "Beth" does n't look at "Duff" at all. This is an aspect of the play which "Pinter" directly stated before the play began, in the staging section.

The reason i find this play such an extraordinary read is due to the fact that it could be interpreted in so many different ways, changing the context dramatically. This is due to the subtle way in which "Pinter" wrote the play, not disclosing much detailed information surrounding his intentions and his ideas on the context.
