Last exit to Brooklyn is gritty and mean. Hubert Selby Jnr. drags the reader by the hair through this unrelenting tale of hopes lost and crushed dreams. Shocking in places and unforgiving in its literary style it could prove to be a bit of a gruelling read if it were not also touching and thought provoking. Hopefully you'll pick up an edition with the preface relating the controversey which preceded its publication and the subsequent trial banning Selby's masterpiece. ... Read the complete review
