James Fenimore Cooper's novels are credited with giving America a sense of itself as a country and a nation. Writing in the 1820s, his work deals largely with the previous century, depicting men struggling in wild places. "The Last of the Mohicans" is a stirring novel, and actualy part of a series, 'The Leatherstocking tales' which deal with the various exploits of Natty Bumppo (also known as Hawkeye.) The plot: Major Duncan Heyward is escorting Cora and Alice Munro to their father, an English Commander stationed at Fort William Henry. The last of the mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper This book has had a few films adapted from it and one of my favourites is the 1992 Blockbuster Starring Daniel Day-Lewis. It is set against the Anglo-French wars in the America’s of the 1750's and in particular follows the siege of the English Fort “William Henry” by the French and Indian allies. The two daughters of the English Commander “Munro” are sent away from the fort as it falls and are aided on their journey by white man Hawk-eye, his adopted father Chingachgoo and his son Uncas (the last 2 remaining people of the Mohican tribe).
