When I was nine I wanted a remote-controlled car for Christmas. Imagine my disappointment when I actually got a keyboard. Not only had my parents made me learn the piano, they now thought I would do so for pleasure? They were right, of course, and my latest keyboard stands two metres to my right as I write this. Another instrument of torture from my childhood was studying Latin. Three times a week I was subjected to the most irrational gibberish, learning grammatical rules of a language that hadn't been spoken for 1500 years.
