Out of Breath - Julie Myerson

Premium Review Hansel and Gretel for grown ups!!! (904 words)

I m a big kid at heart and I still adore fairy tales. So when someone told me that "Out of Breath" by Julie Myserson is essentially a fairy tale for adults, I knew I had to read it. And I wasn t disappointed, although this is definitely the kind of fairy tale that could give you nightmares. It s essentially a coming of age novel, but is quite unlike any I ve read before. The story is told in first person and the prose has a beautiful haunting quality to it, as if you know that something dark is going to happen. It had me hooked from the moment I read the first line. weather is grim! So I walked round to the autobiography section and found the smallest book which looked interesting. This is what I found: Not a games person Julie Myerson I thought I hated school Physical Education lessons. It seems my fears were minuscule compared to the author (Julie). One also feels it s a bit over the top and dramatised. The whole book focus on games lessons at school. I m not an insensitive person, the complete opposite in fact. I just found the book repetitive making no progress. Very neutral the same feelings at the start as there were at the end. To be honest if the book wasn t so short. I would not have bothered finishing it. It was nice ...

it becomes harder and harder to track down past residents or their descendants and Myerson and her long suffering partner, Jonathan, send out lots of speculative letters to people and Julie spends many hours in various public records offices. Whilst I knew this was about the people in the house, I wasn t sure how she would be able to write that much about ordinary people and their everyday lives, particularly once you go back more than 50 or so years. From researching my own family tree, I know that ordinary people are often quite boring (or maybe that is just my ancestors!). However the book is also about her past homes, as she is inspired to go back and try and visit ...
