Browsing around my local car boot sale recently I spotted an interesting looking book for sale. The thing that first attracted me to Laura star was the picture on the cover of a small child holding a bright shiny star on her lap. I knew my 5-year-old son would love this as stars fascinate him at the moment. I paid my 20p for the book and set of home to read it to him. The story. ********* Laura is a little girl who wants a friend to share her secrets with. Gazing out of her window one night at the stars she notices a streak of silver coming towards her. The star lands on the pavement outside of Laura's window. Laura rushes outside with her torch to ... Read the complete review

Laura's Star is a beautifully illustrated book with a delightful story. I hadn't heard of the author /illustrator before, but seeing this certainly gives me the enthusiasm to seek out more of his work. (By searching the web, I found that Baumgart has written a number of other books, but I haven't seen any translated into English yet.) The book was originally written in German, and translated to the English version by Judy Waite. The story concerns a little girl, the eponymous Laura, who sadly has no friends to 'share her secrets with'. It opens with her sat, alone in her room, and we are instantly drawn into the book, feeling for her, in ... Read the complete review

This is a really lovely story. I don't know who loves it more me or my two year old daughter. I look forward to every night's storytime before bed as I must read this to my little girl. She absolutely loves it and shows real emotion when the star vanishes. It is heart warming tale of a lonely little girl who wishes for a friend. The star falls out of the sky and she fixes it's broken point with a plaster and they become best friends. When Laura, the character in the book, wakes in the morning the star has vanished. (this is the sad part where my daughter pulls her sad face) She discovers later that night that the star was there all the ... Read the complete review

Bought by my Mum the year my Daughter was born (you can guess why). I have read this story a thousand times and never tire of it. A beautifully written story of Laura who hasn't got a special friend whom she can tell everything. One night a star falls to the ground and Laura sees it - she runs outside and finds the star but sees that it is broken. She takes the star inside and mends it and they have great fun together and share all sorts of secrets. The next days the star is nowhere to be seen and Laura cannot work out why it has gone - it hasn't gone though - I wonder why she cannot see it? The next night is full of fun but the star begins to feel ... Read the complete review
