Advantages: Good book, leaves you hooked and gets into the minds of teenagers really well
Disadvantages: I'd only reccomend to mid-late teenagers
As a teenager we all learn that life never runs smoothly. We learn that relationships: as much much as we want to be in them with a person we fancy, we learn that as we fall in love things become complicated, and hard work requiring compromise on each side. This book is no exception. It follows the same path as most teenagers go through at some stage; fancying someone, getting them, falling in love and then finding out that things just don't go to plan and require work.
Gemma is 17 and at sixth form college and enjoys photography and most of all, jack slade. Jack slade has quite a reputation for being a ladies man and is captain of the Westgate under 17's rugby team. All jack ever does is think, talk and play rugby and rarely has time to focus on just one girl. Except Amy. Jack met Amy in the summer holidays and spent all his time with her while the rugby season was finished. He was infatuated by her, and she called it off because they lived too far apart.
Jack refuses to let a girl walk all over him again because by falling in love, he's the one who will be left hurting so instead he screws over girls instead of it being the other way round. But then gem comes along. She's different to most girls - she's athletic, interesting, has her own style of fashion and refuses to be like every most girls her age - plastic and fake. Gemma fancies jack like mad and pushes to get to know him. Both driven by lust they date and get to know each other better, but as gem spends more time with jack, she begins to realise that she's leaving her old friends behind, her old hobbies and being second best in jacks life to rugby starts to pull at their relationship.
This is an amazingly written book by Kate Cann and I love how she gets into the mind of teenagers really well. Most girls (and boys) my age and slightly younger can probably relate to this and understand what's going on, which makes you feel as if you are those characters in the book, being pulled in by everything.
It's not my favourite book but it's a good summer read for mid-late teenagers to read and it's one that is hard to put down. Kate Cann writes beautiful books for teenagers and I love every one of them, and this one doesn't disappoint either.
Leader of the pack is available in most bookshops and the RRP's at £6.99 however I think I bought my copy from book superstore for £3, so shop around to get the best deal.
Overall I give this book a 8/10 as I am getting a little older now and moving out of these types of books and it was hooking and intriguing, just not one of my favourites.
