If you have seen "The Dead Poets Society" you will have no doubt noticed the numerous potic references. many of these are to Whalt Whitman - Whitman is the mad poet in the photo show to the class and the source of the lines "Oh captain, my captain". A groundbreaking writer in his time, he has influenced much of the poetry that has folowed him. Whitman belongs to 19th century America, contemporary to some degree with writers like Nathaniel Hawthorne, Emerson, Poe and Thoreau.
