A war novel that follows the 'Astartes' Brotherhood. They are officially Alpha Legion but they often have their own agenda to follow.
They are currently on the world of Nurth and fighting once again in the 'Pacification Campaign'. They are up against overwhelming odds but that is something they are used to and Horus their leader will come up with innovative and surprising ideas to thwart the massive forces arrayed against them.
They are backing the true Imperial forces but questions over their loyalty to the core are now being asked. Can they really be trusted or are they doing something more than just flank the enemy, what are they looking for and what does it have to do with the brotherhood?
Most crucially is there an imperial spy among them, one who has been turned. The Primarch still has influence over some of the legion and that in itself may tear the legion apart.
Finally, What secrets do the natives of Nurth hold and hide, they must be careful it could be so vast as to destroy the imperial forces forever.
A very well written book that has a great twist at the end. A real war novel which is gripping from the start and the plot races along with some surprises and a few old ricks used in the warfare side of things. This book is more for a tecky sci-fi fan. Some technical terms used but it does not detract from the overall good feel to the book.
recommended to read if you get a chance.

A short review today.
The story is set on the world of Nurth, fully 2 years before the 'Heresy' and before Horus becomes the Warmaster.
The book follows the exploits of the Space Marines, Alpha Legion, and their crucial role within the war of compliance, or 'Pacification Campaign', as they arrive on Nurth to back up and support the Imperial Army.
Can Alpha Legion be trusted?
Can the Space Marines trust each other?
And who has been sent with a secret message to the Primarch of the legion and what will that request mean to the legion?
Alpha Legion are the last of the 'Astartes brotherhoods' and they may not last much longer.
Already secrecy and lies and most terrifyingly, truths are beginning to tear the legion apart.
The Imperial army just hopes that when the fighting begins, Alpha legion are on their side and not the mysterious inhabitants of Nerth.
Loyalties will be tested both to the Imperium and more importantly to themselves.
And finally a cunning and devious alien intelligence will be exposed.
Abnett is superb with his descriptive talents and indepth characterisation throughout the story.
The tale is carefully crafted with wheels within wheel and sub plots slowly simmering beneath the surface.
And it is not right till the end of the book that the clever and intriguing twists are revealed.
A thoroughly enjoyable read worthy of your time.
A page turner.
