I recently received this book as a present and it is superb. I have searched long and hard for such a book over the years, but this is the ultimate baking book! There are just so many recipes ranging from the basics of pastry and sponge cakes, to more complicated cakes and pastries often found in cake shops and tea rooms. There are sufficient pictures to break up the text which is laid out effectively and simply. The recipes are easy to follow and most of the ingredients available easily. I really cannot find any criticism to make of this excellent volume; it is quite essential for any discerning cook. When I was little my mum was always baking cakes and pies etc and I really enjoyed helping her. However, in this busy day and age, the art of home baking seems to be dying out a bit - there are so many ready made cakes and pies to buy, and I guess we are all that bit more health and weight conscious so do not want to be continually eating this sort of food. Having said that there, there is little more satisfying than seeing your freshly baked cake come out of the oven, and within a short while actually being able to taste it!
