So a person decides to learn Japanese. Usually learning a language means learning to read and write it. With western European languages, this is simplified by sharing a fairly common alphabet. While you CAN limp along with spoken Japanese and the use of romaji (writing Japanese phonetically using the alphabet we English speakers are used to), it won't get you very far, especially if needing to read anything in actual Japanese.
