Simply the basics (Let's Sign - Cath Smith)
Member Name: lol0304
Advantages: Effective and clear Disadvantages: Too basic for those who are more advance; for example; level 2 or 3 bsl users I am a second year student at reading studying the course "Theatre arts, education and deaf studying" which is accessible to both hearing and deaf people. In my first year, British Sign Language was completely new to me, so to guide my learning of the language, of which we was having one lecture a week on, i headed straight for the librabary (which is one specialising in education). One of the many sets books i found were the "Cath Smith" range and out of the many different books i chose to study the basic signs book as well as the CD rom. These are aimed at quite young children, a school classroom and families, however i wanted to start right from the basics and found this range very useful. Due to its target audience, the pictures, graphics and texts are all very colourful, bold and clear which allows them to be understood and appreciated more thouroughly. I would reccomment these books to schoolchildren learning the ultimate basics, such as fingerspelling and if i remember correctly this version gives both the right handed and left handed version of British fingerspelling. This would therefore give guidance to a further range of pupils, enhanced by the many different factes which are included such as specifically targetted projects and tasks which could be given to children to help their development of British Sign Language. Summary: Guiding the way into a fascinating and fulfilling language. |
