Advantages: A brill read, can't wait for reading the sequel
Disadvantages: NONE!
This book I fully enjoyed, it was so intense that I couldn't wait to finish the book, then I noticed there was a sequel and I seriously couldn't believe it and I had no option apart from buying that book I now officially have 4 favourite authors, these are: Meg Cabot, Stephenie Meyer, Darren Shan, and this book's author Susan Pfeffer. To be totally honest I don't know how to pronounce her last name, I've been saying it as Pfeiffer as in "Michelle Pfeiffer" and I thought they could have been related, how more wrong could I have been? Susan is such a great author that puts in a lot of detail and really emphasises on character's feelings and emotions, this really does make this book so exceptional. I was glued to the book when I was reading it, it was soooooooo intense, and at times I found myself shouting at the characters saying words such as "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO" and "You Shouldn't do that!" at about 2am in the morning, and after doing so one of my parents come into my bedroom and tell me to go to sleep (which I do not as I need to finish the chapter). I was close to crying at the really sad parts in the story (and I have to tell you they get worse and worse). I could see this book becoming 2 things: 1) being made into a film (but I would hate it if the director changed the story!) and 2) winning lots of awards as it's such a phenomenal book!
This book is about a teenaged girl called Miranda. She has started a journal, to report her life after the "big day", this day is about something that would be known in history for ages, that is if there is another year left! At exactly 9:30 in the evening, an asteroid will supposedly strike the moon. The astronomers say it's nothing to worry about, only they are completely wrong. Miranda sees the moon everyday, it's just there, big as ever, and it's stuck in the gravity, no longer orbiting the Earth. Only, anyone would think that no fast food restaurants, not TV, no electricity, no malls, no daylight, a shortage of food, and no idea of knowing if your family is doing, is the worst, most possible thing Miranda would have to face, only they are just as wrong as the astronomers, as there is worse to come
I quite liked finding out how such a brilliant idea popped into Susan's head! She has written in the book this: "I was wasting my time one weekend and found that some cable station was showing the movie 'Meteor' which I hadn't seen in decades. It turned out to be pretty bad, but it got me thinking that end of the world stories don't tend to focus on young people, even though they're the ones who would lose the most. The next thing I knew, I was deciding just how to end the world. I've always been fascinated by consequences, the 'what happens next' of stories, so 'Life As We Knew It' was natural for me - what happens next in a teenager's life when everything in the world shatters, and all she can do is fight, along with her family, to survive?" This really defines how such a great thoughtful idea can become such a great book.
Now you may have noticed that in my recent book reviews I've been saying that I should start reading more adult books as the children's section has become pretty boring, however, this is categorised in the same category as "Beast" and "Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie", although, those were not to my interest, I fully enjoyed reading "Life As We Knew It" and wouldn't mind reading it again, only I have lots of books to read!
I truly believe that this book, at least, should be nominated for a book award, it is such a brilliant and fascinating story, and you'd be so terrified. Susan Pfeffer makes you imagine you're Miranda. I also like how she ends this book, I really don't want to go into it but you have to wipe a tear from your eye (however could that be due to the fact that Miranda is alone? Or is it for Joy and hope? Or could something worse happen?). I'm sure I haven't given anything away yet!
I would recommend this to everyone and anyone, but I have to say that this book is made for people who mainly hates their life or is having a really bad day; once they've read this they'd feel a lot better as they would say that their life is not as bad as they thought as Miranda and her family are put into a worse situation, that no one could even imagine.
I thank you all so much for your comments and ratings; I would really like to see more comments to help me improve my reviews!
And don't forget to nominate me on 29th January ad that can be my birthday present off you lot please!
