Advantages: Enjoyable read
Disadvantages: Couple of plot jumps with little explanation
I enjoyed the book Anita and Me by Meera Syal who was one of the stars of the comedy show Goodness Grascious Me and this book is a delightful story of three female friends relationship living in the East End of London.
Chila is the rather fumpy one of the three and she is about to be married to Deepak, for Chila this is a big day and it is a traditional Indian wedding. Depak her new husband is seen as a real catch and some people are surprised that he has married Chila after he had a rather playboy past. Sunita is the second of the trio, married with two children her marriage is struggling due to her left wing mostly angry husband. Finally there is Tania, a successful independant woman who works in TV and currently lives with a struggling writer. She has a past with Deepak and still has some feelings for him.
There are some nice light hearted comedy moments in this book but there are also some quite emotional sections as well dealing with hurt and betrayal. I found it a really addictive read and a very hard book to put down.
Some of the plot is a little predictable and at times I struggled to understand just how quickly characters seemd to change or develop with relatively little explanation and it does jump in time a few times.
Howeer this book is a enjoyable emotional read and one that is well worth checking out. Syal has a wonderfully natural writing style that is very easy to consume and as such the book is quiote a page turnerand ideal weekend reading.
Summary: Excellent read
