... for example the PJ's worn by Arthur and the Towel carried by Ford are stuck firmly on the minds of anyone who enjoys these books, the way in which the characters are impacted upon us really helps to make the book a better read. Its a brilliant Sci-fi/fantasy book and Adams is a brilliant writer. Arthur and Ford don't want to save the Universe because they don't care about anything but going to parties, but they have to try to save it because they hitched a lift in a spaceship belonging to Slartibartfast, the man ...more

Crowned Review Life, the Universe and Everything - Douglas Adams: From Ultra Violent to Infra Dead (1905 words)
by - written on 02/07/04 (Very useful, 109 readings)
Rating:

The first three books in the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy trilogy of five were published in consecutive years from 1980 to 1982 and as such share a common style and similar themes more than the final two books that were written some time later. ‘Life, the Universe and Everything’ offers a satisfying conclusion (although one that was not destined to be permanent) to the very funny and ingenious storyline that started with a man lying in his dressing gown in front of a bulldozer. Some of the late Douglas Adams’ fans do not hold this third instalment in the same regard as the first two books, both of which were based largely on the original BBC radio show ...  Read the complete review

Douglas Adams - Life, the universe and Everything. This book was published in 1982 by Pan Books, Douglas Adams book "the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy was recently created into a film which for me left a lot to be desired; unlike this book which was brilliant. The main character, Arthur Dent, wakes up in Prehistoric Earth. He is joined by Ford Prefect, an odd organic lifeform and other intriguing characters. Douglas Adams has worked really hard on little details that many readers would not notice, for example the PJ's worn by Arthur and the Towel carried by Ford are stuck firmly on the minds of anyone who enjoys these books, the way in which the ...  Read the complete review

Life, The Universe and Everything. An ambitious title, you may think! In this, the third enthralling installment of the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" series, Douglas Adams writes, what I feel is, one of the most cohesive and entertaining books of the series. Adams' is fond of a complex plot and fans of his tangential narrative style will not be disappointed in this book. But there's a deeper purpose behind it all. Arthur's diversion to the inside of a mountain, where he comes face to face with the man he has been systematically (and unknowingly) killing for the past 30 years or so, suddenly explains why the bowl of petunias from book 1 was heard ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Its not Cricket (555 words)

Rating:

Slartibartfast. Wowbagger the Infinitely prolonged. Hactar the computer. Hoopy froods who along with the regular cast of Ford, Arthur, Zaphod, Trillian and Marvin the paranoid android; and the inventiveness of the word processor of Douglas Adams Life, make reading Life, the Universe and Everything a very pleasurable experience This is the 3rd (but not final) book in the Hitchhiker’s guide to the Galaxy Trilogy, but don’t worry you don’t have to have read the preceding books to make sense of this one, just remember it’s not meant to make sense. The story starts with Ford and Arthur stranded in Earth’s pre-history, ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Life, the Universe and Everything - Douglas Adams: Arthur Dent, you are a complete a*****e! (486 words)
by - written on 03/08/01 (Very useful, 338 readings)
Rating:

When Douglas Adams first wrote "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" as a radio serial, he found that he couldn't just leave it like that. I mean what on Earth was supposed to happen next? Suddenly he had written four more books, and christened them a trilogy. Go figure! So this book belongs right in the middle, it being the thrid book in the series of five. Like other Douglas Adams books, there isn't much in the line of character development of the main characters, apart from Marvin the Paranoid Android (an android that sits around complaining about how under-used he is the whole time - his depessed warblings are absolutely ...  Read the complete review

A gripping fast flowing book that's impossible to put down. Once you've read 3 or 4 they all start to look the same.

Intelligent, witty, imaginative and wonderfully written Science fiction genre may put off some readers - but it's worth a try!

Incredibly funny, at times. 1 in 10 words are just, not funny. Still, it's worth it!

Fast Storyline, Exciting Rushed Finish, Mistakes

Nicely different, Arthur Dent receiving some good luck at last Different from what I would have hoped, but possibly better than if Adams had simply re-treaded old ground

A very welcome return to a familiar cast of old friends.... You may lose much of the impact if you have not read the Farseer and Liveship series'
