This is a story all about stories and yet contains far fewer seeming random tales than Jeanette Winterson's more famous work "Oranges are not the only fruit". The book has two stories running through it. The first is set in the 'present' of a young girl who becomes an orphan and finds herself living with a blind lighthouse keeper who gives her a passion for stories.
