Like the Flowing River - Paulo Coelho ... philosophy of one who observes existence with the same placidity of gazing at a river. Undoubtedly, with a clear intention of approaching and revealing the mystery and the ways in which a man walks through life. Telling the story of human beings, with their numerous edges, is what Paulo Coelho considers his mission. Telling what they are and how they are, without necessarily bonding to what they want or to what they pretend. Almost like instant pictures of life. Brief and intense pieces of writing that show us a tiny eternal moment of someone's living. Just like a boy who writes on his notebook with more awareness of his pen than the content of his tale, simply because everything will depend on the way we look at things. These are delicate and pure reflections about literature, history, the art of love or the way to become an archer, when repetition turns into intuition, extolling the capacity of the senses. Or about books and libraries, where the ordinary act of choosing contents can project to life in all its most various shades.

This is the first of Paulo Coelho s books that I read. This Brazilian author was not known to me but was highly recommended by a friend who thought that I might enjoy his books as much as he did. Apparently, the author has sold over 56 million books around the world. I chose to read this particular book first as I was intrigued by the fact that the book is based upon the life, or at least, one particular part of the life, of Elijah, the fiery prophet from the Old Testament of the Bible. Although the book is based upon the Biblical account of Elijah s life, the story is, unsurprisingly, considerably expanded to become a novel of around 240 pages. It follows Elijah as ...

by catsholiday - written on 14/12/08 (Very useful, 128 readings)
Rating:

Paul Coelho was born in Brazil in 1949. He always wanted an artistic career but his father was an engineer and thought his ideas of being a writer were a sign of mental instability. When he was only 17 his father put him in a mental institution for electroconvulsive therapy twice. He was sent there again after he became involved with a theatre group and was working as a journalist. Despite this difficult start to his career Coelho has become a worldwide best seller. His first book was written after he had walked the Santiago de Compostello pilgrimage trial in Northern Spain, the book was called 'The Pilgrimage'. His next book was 'The Alchemist' which was not an immediate success on ...
