Advantages: can't put it down
Disadvantages: still a bit too war-y for me
Greek war fantasy set in 360 B.C. is not normally my kind of reading but I'll give anything a try once (!). The Lion of Macedon is the beginning of the tale of a unique warrior - Parmenion - who has a mixed background and therefore no particular alliance to any of the warring factions in Greece at that time? he travels the country using his amazing skill for war strategy where it is needed. Gemmell's books are apparently based closely on fact where fights and manoeuvres are concerned (although I wouldn't know any better if they were completely made up). The tale of Parmenion itself though is Gemmell's own work of fiction and I found it pretty captivating to read. The story mixes the excitement of war (which I tend to find a little tedious in fiction because it normally goes into way too much unnecessary detail), with the mystery of Greek gods and of magical priestesses. Parmenion, the lead character, has his destiny set to confront the 'Dark Prince' who will be born during Parmenion's lifetime. It turns out that Parmenion has a rather closer link with the evil child than was previously thought!!! The story also features a little romance! A little loving, a little grooving (you know what I mean? - there was lots of it going on in those days!!!) But Parmenion's deep, touching romances all seem to end in tragedy. I think it is Gemmell's use of mystery along with war and romance that made this book readable for me when I would usually steer well clear of its type. I really enjoyed reading it and could barely put it down so as soon as I have finished writing this, I will start reading the sequel - 'The Dark Prince'.

mvwmail - 18/04/02 David Gemmell takes his research very seriously, so if he says something is based on actual events (as per his intro) it most likely is.
He has currently paid for a load of research on Constance the Great.. it will take approx 2 years to collate the information.. now that's dedication to a theme!! |
