Disadvantages: Humour might not be suitable

Agents John Corey and Kate Mansfield are waiting for a plane from Paris, a plane carrying a Libyan terrorist who is defecting to the West. However, something goes terribly wrong and they soon find themselves chasing a very cunning killer across the country.

These days, in the world of the average thriller, it is not often that you find one that you cannot put down. I am pleased to say that ‘The Lion’s Game’ is a finely crafted thriller, with a tight plot but also a story into which DeMille is not afraid to throw a few laughs. Indeed, the comments by John Corey, who first appeared in ‘Plum Island’, had me laughing out loud from time to time. He also narrates the story, which adds to its quality.

His characters are developed, especially Corey since he has had one novel already to begin this. Kate Mansfield is also a very human character and DeMille also goes to great lengths to develop the terrorist Asad Khalil, to show the readers why he is carrying out a terror campaign, and to give him as many dimensions as possible. The ending is intriguing and leaves a few questions and also a few options open for another book, if DeMille decides that Corey has it in him. I think that we may well be seeing him back.

Nelson DeMille has written some superb thrillers over the years and this book serves to reinforce his reputation as one that is well deserved.
