The Lonely Planet Lisbon, 2nd edition 2001, by Julia Wilkinson, £8.99, 196pp. THE LONELY PLANET GUIDE BOOKS ARE FAMOUS WORLD-WIDE and have managed somehow to globalise independent budget travel. There is an argument these days that if you really want to be independent you should avoid the LP bibles, as if you follow their itineraries you’ll be following in the footsteps of everyone else- hardly independent thought!
