Advantages: Gentle story for Easter
Disadvantages: none
It's less than 6 weeks til Easter and as all the Christmas things are past us now and the Easter Eggs are well and truly stocking the shelves of the shops, I thought I would share this book with you all. If you are looking for an alternative gift to chocolate then you might want to give this book a go.
***Background***
This book is written by Sophie Piper and is illustrated by Gaby Hansen. Sophie Piper is better known for writing Bible stories but this one isn't religious at all apart from the fact that it happens at Easter.
Gaby Hansen has illustrated many children's books for a variety of different writers including David Bedford and Jane Johnson.
***The Story***
This book tells the story of a little bunny that wakes up in a basket on a shelf alongside lots of other little bunnies.
Soon a lady and her two children come into the shop and they decide to buy Little Bunny. She is very happy about this, as they look very kind.
They stop off at their Grandpa's house and unfortunately a big dog carries Little Bunny away until she finds herself all alone under a bush with only a spider for company. She hears the sounds of goodbyes in the distance and feels very sad.
A fox stops by but quickly realises that this is not a real rabbit and runs away. Then Little Bunny hears lots of strange nighttime noises and she finds herself being moved again by two rats. She is rescued by a friendly hen, that takes her into the hen house but Little Bunny still feels very lonely until one day the eggs hatch and the chicks attract the young voices of the children who bought the bunny in the first place. They soon see Little Bunny and are delighted to find her. The little girl gives Little Bunny a great big hug and she feels like she is home at last.
***The Illustrations***
The pictures in this book are gentle and beautifully drawn. The expressions on the bunny's face are really expressive and you actually feel the sadness coming from the picture.
***My Thoughts***
As anyone who has read other reviews of mine that have rabbits in them will know, my son has a floppy bunny of his own and it gets dragged everywhere with him. The bunny in this story is very much like his own with its droopy ears and big floppy feet. The only difference is that the one in the book is brown and his is grey.
This story is a bit of an adventure tale really with the bunny unable to do anything to get the children to notice her plight. There are times in the book when you do wonder whether they will be reunited in the end.
The sadness is shown exceptionally well through the drawings and my son always says, 'awww,' at certain pages. He can associate with this sadness as he has mislaid favourite toys in the past and has wondered if we would ever find them again.
This book doesn't have any hidden meanings in it but is just a lovely storybook for young children. It is nice to get a book like this occasionally although I am all for books that promote good behaviour. It is gentle and shows how a lost toy has feelings, making it all the more real for your child.
I would say that this book would be mainly for the under 5s but I'm sure some slightly older children would like this tale too.

MagdaDH - 28/02/07 My daughter's favourite cuddly was also a rabbit, she still occasionally sleeps with him (occasionally it gets upgraded to 'her') at the age of almost 6. |
