Advantages: Short story, Great for language development,

Disadvantages: Price if you buy all in set.

For several weeks now we have been reading the Mr Men books to Toby before he goes to bed, now we have finished those we are working our way through the Little Miss books. As we (Toby, Dad and I) are enjoying them so much I wanted to share them with you too.

This book is number 1 in the complete collection from Roger Hargreaves, and is all about Little Miss Bossy, a circular blue character who wears a red hat, with a yellow band and white daisy sticking out from it. The picture on the front of the book shows Little Miss Bossys mouth wide open!

All Mr Men and Little Miss stories are laid out in the same way, with writing on the left hand page and a colourful, simple picture on the facing page.

This particular story follows Miss Bossy, and a week in here life when she was bossy to someone different everyday, until a wizard called Wilfred, thought that something should be done about it. I'm not going to spoil the story by telling you what happened after her meeting with Wilfred.

The Little Miss Bossy story has 16 pages with words on; some of these pages contain only a few words whilst others are full. Due to the size it is a fantastic book for story time, as the book itself only measures 14cms x 13cms, an ideal size to hold, during sleepy cuddles before sleep.

I have grown up reading and enjoying Mr Men and Little Miss stories, and this one can teach so much: clearly the main idea of the story is to teach you what may happen if you were bossy to people, and how it can upset, obviously you know full well you are not going to meet a wizard, but children believe anything when they are small.

Other things which can be learnt from this story is language; many words are repeated throughout the story, and children hearing the same words but in different ways can help encourage their Language development and vocabulary.

If you read the story and put yourself into character, as if you are acting out the book, children can carry this through in role play and help build up emotions and their own character.

Toby loved listening to these books before bed, and if he plays up we don't read one! The next night you can guarantee we will read a book as he is very well behaved and is cooperative in getting ready for bed, he often copies some of the words we say, and in this story he repeated the word 'please' and 'boots.' The more he said them the clearer they became, and now in everyday talking he can say these words really well.

We all love these stories and look forward to bedtime, not only to get a bit of quiet time after Toby is asleep, but because it's a special time when Toby sits still to listen to a story whilst cuddled up. He is only 2 and loves these books; I feel they are suitable for children of this age right up to 7/8 year olds, as they are also great for children learning to read themselves.

There are currently 33 books in this collection, and in time I will be reviewing them all. I bought my book for £1.25 but this was several years ago. They currently retail at £1.99 but shop around as you will be sure to get it cheaper. You can also buy it as a complete collection for approx £30.

If you collect all the books, be sure to stand them in order on your bookshelf as the spines spell out 'My little miss library' and also has a picture of a flower.

Thank you for reading
